Pub Night On the 14th of June, I remind you that the German Club has an end-of-term pub night. Happy hour is
from 5.30-6.30, and afterwards you're free to go out on the town or hang around. I know that Heidi has emailed you all on
this matter, so no excuses unless you have to work or you have a party to go to.
Kaffeeklatch Kaffeeklatch will remain at 1 pm on Thursdays next semester, in the Margaret Murray (except for
on the rare occasion when we have to move). I encourage you to try to make it, because there's nothing like coffee and cake
on a cold wintry day.
The play Just a reminder that it's not too late to get involved. I know this is a busy time of year but you might
feel like it when the exam stress is over.
Presenting...The German Club Committee
The President:Heidi Holzknecht
Hallo und Grüsse! Welcome to the Adelaide University German Club. My name is Heidi Holzknecht, and for this
year I will be the venerated President of the AUGC Committee. I'm doing second year International Studies and first year Law,
which means I think I'm really in the best of both worlds, but you could probably prove me wrong. Last year I joined the German
Club and had an absolute ball. I encourage you to get into as many events as possible, the German Play being a big one. (Editor's note: Yeah!) Finally, if you ever have any questions about the German Club, Study, Uni, Life in General, please feel
free to ask...I may not know the answers, but I'm pretty sure to know someone who does! Have a wonderful term, and Good Luck!
Auf Wiedersehen! Heidi.
The Secretary:Adrian Jones
In the absence of a contribution from Adrian I am forced to write one myself. I offer a disclaimer that
anything defamatory contained in the following passage may be fiction. Adrian Jones is the secretary of the
German Club. At 21 years old he is studying fourth year law, and last year he directed the German Club play "Romulus der Groesse".
He has been to Germany many many times, cheifly in search and enjoyment of the stimulating drinking environment, and whiles
away his time there getting drunk and sleeping under tables in German pubs. This is a hobby he tries to emulate at our own
German Association on Flinders St, and a variety of other pubs in Adelaide. He enjoys German, macrame, and votes Liberal.
The Treasurer:David Robertson
Hello fellow German Clubbers, just a few words to introduce myself as your beloved treasurer! My name's
Dave Robertson and I'm in my 3rd year of a Bachelor of International Studies (ok, ok, it's just a glorified BA...). Claim
to fame? The resurrection of the institution that is "Not the Oktoberfest"! Likes/Dislikes? I like beer. I dislike bad and
expensive Victorian beer. So...Need some money for a great German Club function? Tips on how to run a ripper of a German Club
party? Assistance in the refinement of drinking techniques? Well, I'm your man! Your Skase in the making, Dave Robertson.
Your Editor. Melinda Stanners
As you're all well aware of by now, I'm Melinda Stanners, and I will be in charge of producing our
quarterly German Club newsletter. I'm a 2nd year Psychology+English/1st year Law student, and plan to resurrect my German
in the form of a diploma once I have gotten the rest of Arts out of the way. My favourite colour is blue, I like artichokes,
and I went to school with the president. I'm also directing your play, and you can talk to me at any time at Kaffeeklatch
or via email. WILD! is your newsletter, German Clubbers, so feel free to email me with anything you think should go into it
- stories, anecdotes about trips to Germany, poetry, in English or German.
Publicity Officer Michael Niemz Michael too has forfeited his right to write an intro for himself, so I must take some liberties. Standard disclaimer
applies (see Adrian's).
Elusive and hard to contact,
Michael is our publicity officer. While purported to be doing a computing degree of some description, and plays football,
all that is known is that he is a first year, and adept with making posters. Someone from one of the student polly parties
should get ahold of him soon...
General Committee Member Claire Robinson
Claire Robinson is our General Commitee member. She is a 2nd year arts student, studying German in a diploma
of languages. She took part in last years German play, which she insists was one of the best weeks of the year-so if you're
not involved she orders you to get involved now!! She is responsible for Kaffeeklatch, making sure that German Clubbers get
cake on Thursdays, and hence one of the most important people in the German Club.
First Year Rep Cristina Barbulescu
Ciao, German Clubbers... oops, wrong language. I'm Cristina, your first year rep and cross my
heart etc. I'll try to do a good job. I just joined the german Club, and for those of you who know my face and not my name,
I'm the one with the accent. I'm doing first year Computer Science, and it's a love/hate relationship. I love travelling (who
doesn't) and talking to people, as well as eating, so, as you can imagine, Kaffeeklatch is a highlight in my week. Drop me
an email (at crispoppins@yahoo.com) or chat to me on Thusdays at 1pm.
Trivia Night Roundup
AUGC VS AUFC TRIVIA NIGHT Let all Deutschlanders Unite!
We triumphed in the end! And Yes, the German Club vs. French Club was a great success!
With no absolutely permanent table bookings before
the actual event organisers were silently pleading with the heavens for signs of life the minutes ticked by and then suddenly
they started arriving in droves, challengers for the ultimate in Adelaide University Cultural Intelligence Trivia. You could
spot the fanatics, the ones with a keen gleam in their eye, and a slight lift of the lip as they faced each other and searched
for a table that would give them the best advantage in the upcoming battle.
In some cases it was unclear as to where Tables staked
their loyalty, but for the German Club we had fair representation in the following groups. Claire Robinson had put together
a table of minds which she was sure could not go wrong, including such notables as Christina Barbulescu (1st year Rep) and
Ulrike Marwitz (former Publicity Officer). Team Hard BeneLux: Adrian Jones and Beth Nosworthy were surrounded by
keen analytical minds from the depths of the Law Library. Table 2: At the front were a group assembled by Jonathon
Webb, despite the fact that Jonathon himself was not straining his brains for answers. We also had the pleasure of a table
from the Clubs Association Executive, who put together a strong team, and perhaps provided a balance to the challenge.
During all 10 rounds the fight was fierce and incredibly
close. To create spaces of less mental tension, the rounds were interspersed with games such as: Heads and Tails, Paper Plane
making contests, Pin the City on the Map and True or False. However, in the end there was one clear winner Congratulations
to Team Hard BeneLux! A solid victory, with Runners-Up to Vanilla Rainbow Wombat Love Collective ( I think,
apologies to the team that did come runners up if I got it wrong!) Refreshments were available all night thanks to the overwhelming
cake-making efforts from Beth, Claires Mum, Dave, A.J, Christina and Annalises Mum. They were basically all devoured before
the night was out, it must have been all those brains requiring frequent re-fueling.
Especial thanks go to Hannah, Rachel (French Club),
Dave and Jono (German Club) on the organising committee, for their tireless efforts in getting everything (questions, prizes,
games) together. Also to Jonathon and Jeremy for their amusing banter which made the night run smoothly, and encouraged the
cash to flow. To all the people who provided cake, coffee and other things necessary to refreshments. Finally, to everyone
who attended; your contributions to the evening made it a great success that will also help both Clubs with their up-coming
Plays.
